Fire Pokemon

Fires are great in G/S they are about the only thing that can take care of steel/bug and that type is fairly common. They also take out bug types which are now somewhat more important. The archetypal fire type moveset is

Sunny Day
Solar Beam
Flamethrower
Other move

This moveset is great becuase sunny day makes solarbeam a one turn move so once you've used sunny day your opponent can't take you out with a rock, water or ground type without getting hammered. And with the advent of Pokemon Crystal, all fire types will be created equal as there will be a flamethrower HM.

Charmander Bred moves: Belly Drum, Ancientpower, Rock Slide, Bite, Outrage, Beat Up
Charmeleon
Vulpix Bred Moves: Faint Attack, Hypnosis, Flail, Spite, Disable
Ninetales
Unfortunately Ninetales took a hit in the special attack department when it move over to G/S so it's not the powerhouse it was. It's still a good pokemon especially since it has speed on it's side. The new G/S moves it can get make it interesting. Probably fast enough to use a detect/spite combo.
Growlithe
Bred moves: Thrash, Crunch, Safeguard, Fire Spin
Arcanine
A high attack pokemon also fast and it even got a boost in special attack in G/S. Also learns extreme speed at level 50. It's a great attack especially in combo with curse because Extreme Speed always goes first. Crunch with Arcanine's increase special attack isn't too shabby either.
Ponyta
Bred Moves: Flame Wheel, Thrash, Double Kick, Hypnosis, Charm, Quick Attack
Rapidash
Rapidash is, as you might guess, one of the fastest pokemon in the game. It's special is mediocre but it's attack is pretty good. It's defense is't too great so with rapidash destroy your opponent before it destroys rapidash. The G/S translation kept it's stats the same. Still a good fire type.
Magby
Bred Moves: Karate Chop, Mega Punch, Barrier, Screech
Magmar
Magmar got a nice boost in special attack in G/S. It will be even better in Crystal because it will be able to get Cross Chop through breeding. Even now it's still quite powerful and useful especially since it can get psychic and psychic attacks are still useful in G/S.
Flareon
Really high attack and really high special but it's slow and has low defense so flareon may not be around long enough to get to use it's attack or special. Probably not a bad curse user especially if you give it lots of attack based moves like shadow ball, headbutt or an attack based hidden power.
Cyndaquil

Quilava
Typhlosion
Typhlosion is an excellent fire pokemon. It can counter it's water weakness with thunderpunch and can learn earthquake. Third among fire types in special attack and an all around good pokemon. Plus in Crystal it will be able to get submission through breeding.
Slugma
Bred Moves:Acid Armor

Part Fire pokemon
Fire Flying Fire flying types were improved a bit in that ice is no longer super effective on them since fire resists ice.
Charizard
This guy is a lot of people's favorite. It's special attack was improved quite a bit in G/S and it can get rock slide through breeding. Still a good choice.
Moltres
It's special defense took a major hit in G/S Although a flying type it's only flying attack is either peck or sky attack neither are really very useful. I have heard rumors that in crystal you will be able to get "baby" legendaries so moltres learn wing attack and flamethrower.
Ho-Oh
Yet another legendary bird but it looks cool. Plus unlike Moltres it can get recover, solarbeam, earthquake, shadow ball, Psychic,Thunder-Whew. Well anyway it's stats are VERY high-It has the same stat sum as Mewtwo. A massive power which should probably be used with caution. Remember the double weakness to rock though . . .
Magcargo
Who thought this one up anyway. It's Fire Rock so it's Double weak to ground and water- probably about THE two biggest fire weaknesses. Stat wise it's very defensive but it's probably still not enough. Get it acid armor through breeding and let it learn amnesia and it might be able to survive for a while.
Entei
Kind of Defensively oriented for a legendary pokemon. Can get the standard fire moveset but not totally worth it since it's special attack is fairly low.

Houndoom
Houndoom is covered under Dark types
