Just when you though we had enough water pokemon along comes gold and silver
and we have still more
Pure Water Pokemon
Staryu
Goldeen
Seaking
An underused water pokemon. Doesn't have the best stats in the world
especially for a water pokemon. Fairly fast with high attack an mediocre
stats otherwise. Can get haze, hydro pump and psybeam through breeding.
Horsea
Seadra
Kingdra
One of our new dragon types and a new water pokemon with virtually
no weaknesses. Good stats. Has little move versaility when compared to
other water pokemon but in all ways a real powerhouse. The morning breath
combo is rather nice on it:
Morning Breath
Dragonbreath
Rest
Hydro pump
Ice beam
Poliwag
Poliwhirl
Politoed
Similar to poliwrath but more special based. Can get psychic. Otherwise
an average good stated pokemon.
Vaporeon
Second highest special attack water pokemon and tied for 15th overall
in special. It's special defense took a little hit but still a good wall.
It's no longer unique in water pokemon that can get haze. It will be one
of the few pokemon that would be able to baton pass acid armor if crystal
comes out because eevee will be able to get baton pass.
Wartortle
Blastoise
It was given the ability to get mirror coat in G/S which is basically
the special based form of counter. Balanced stats mostly what you would
expect in a starter pokemon. Can get Mirror Coat, Haze, Mist, Confusion,
Foresight, and Flail through breeding
Krabby
Kingler
A high attack and defense water pokemon. Slow and with low special
but amnesia can be bred on to it. Which makes it a really tough customer
if transferred back to stadium or R/B/Y. Still a good pokemon but probably
better with amnesia. These moves can be bred to a newly hatched krabby
Dig, Haze, Amnesia, Flail, Slam.
Seel
Shellder
Psyduck
Golduck
It was really helped out in the switch to G/S. It can now get all sorts
of moves and in crystal It will be able to get cross chop-the most powerful
fighting move. These moves can be bred now Ice Beam, Hypnosis, Psybeam,
Foresight, Light Screen, Future Sight, Psychic
Remoraid
Octillery
An all offensive pokemon high attack and psecial attack but low defense,
special defense and slow. a good attacker but remember that it's defenses
aren't great. Can get these moves through breeding:Aurora Beam, Octazooka,
Supersonic, Haze, Screech.
Totodile
Croconaw
Feraligatr
A high attack water pokemon with average special. Not bad since it's
a starter but the best movesets are only available through breeding: Crunch,
Thrash, Hydro Pump, Ancientpower, Razor Wind, Rock Slide. Crunch is a little
questionable since it's special attack isn't too hot.
Marrill
Azumarill
Slow with defensive stats. Good defense, HP and special defense but
pretty bad otherwise.
Suicine
A legendary dog(suicine looks the most like a dog or wolf of all of
them) with good stats-Duh. Learns mirror coat which it probably it's main
selling point other than that has fairly low move versatility.
Part water pokemon
Water psychic
Slowpoke
Slowbro
High defense and SLOW but you probably would have figured that out
by the name. Has good special attack in G/S but bad special defense so
Tobybro still works.
Tobybro
Surf
Amnesia
Rest
Thunderwave
Slowking
So what's the difference between slowbro and slowking? Very little
actually. Slowbro's defense is slowking's special defense and slowbro's
special defense is slowking's defense. They have the same stats otherwise.
Since slowbor can get amnesia and fix his SD problem there's really almost
no advantage to using a slowking.
Starmie
Likely to be a very popular pokemon in G/S because of the ability to
learn both thunderwave and confuse ray. This has lead to the adoption of
the Death Starmie moveset:
Death Starmie
Thunderwave
Surf
Recover
Confuse Ray
Item-king's rock
Remember that psychics are not without weaknesses in G/S and a Heracross
can kill even a max stat Starmie in one hit from mega horn. Starmie also
has to worry about Darks as well as the usual electrics.
Water rock
Kabuto
Kabutops
Similar to kingler in low special, high attack, high defense and hyperdance
ability. Devastated by grass attacks because of rock type. In G/S it can
get ancient power- a rock type move
Omanyte
Omastar
Has high defense and high special but is also slow. I think it is underused
and can be quite useful. Also learns ancient power and can get haze through
breeding. As with Kabutops beware of grass!
Corsola
Learns recover and is defensively built stat wise. Doesn't have the
greatest stats so may be best used with ancient power. Can get Rock Slide,
Safeguard, Screech, Mist, Amnesia through breeding. and is the only way
to get amnesia onto krabby.
Water Ground
Wooper
Quagsire
Wow a water type that's immune to electricity. Quagsire's big selling
point is it's type combination but it's stats are fairly good too. High
attack and defense with low special. Learns amnesia, earthquake and haze.
A good answer to death starmie since it cannot be paralysed. An excellent
addition to almost any team.
Water Ice
Dewgong
A fairly generic water and ice type. Ice has more weaknesses in G/S
so it's best to be carful using it.
Cloyster
Highest defense in the game and that's about all you can say for cloyster.
It's other stats are just plain mediore. Can use toxic/ clamp which is
similar to toxic spin and toxic wrap. Can be a good move combination but
often not worth the effort.
Lapras
Slow but with high defense and good special. Like starmie it can learn
a wide variety of moves including psychic and even solarbeam. It can also
learn electric moves so beware when fighting lapras. As with other ice
types beware of fighting and steel.
Water Poison
Tentacool
Tentacruel
Took a big hit in special attack when it was moved to G/S. Now has
the same SA as rapidash. Has the same SD as magneton but obviously it's
attacking power has really taken a hit. Still a good water type especially
because of it's speed but with most teams have several pokemon with earthquake
beware.
Qwilfish
Reasonable speed with good attack. Lerans pin missle and can get Haze,
Flail, Supersonic, and Bubblebeam through breeding. Worth a look.
Water Flying
Gyarados
Gyarados really took a hit when moving over to G/S. It's special attack
was reduced and it was given little to compensate. It is still a very powerful
poke stat wise but as always beware electricty.
Mantine
Kind of an oddball stat wise fourth highest special defense in the
game and it needs it being so weak to electricty. Otherwise it's stats
are fairly good minus it's attack which is horrid. Can get Tornado, Hydro
Pump, Haze, and Slam through breeding.
Poliwrath-fighting
Poliwrath is a great pokemon. It doesn't have great special but it
can learn amnesia. It can also learn psychic as well as fighting moves.
unfortunately it can't learn any of the best fighting moves and is stuck
with submission. Still though with the importance of fighting types in
G/S don't overlook it. Just don't forget that it is part fighting and so
weak to psychic and flying.
Water Electric
Chinchou
Lanturn
An awesome poke if for no other reason than type. The quintessential
rain dancer and the only one to get a STAB on both thunder and surf. Don't
overlook it as it is quite useful.
Rain Dancer
